If he’s willing to die, why does he do what he does?
He’s such a fascinating character to me.
Jem kills me. He’s batshit insane, but he’s loyal to a fault. He calls Doug his brother, but Doug only thinks of Jem “like” a brother. He’s willing to throw down when Doug needs him, but Doug watches him die in the street. Jem went to prison for 9 years because he killed a kid who was going to kill Doug. Jem’s family took him in after Doug’s father went to jail, but Doug brushes it off like, “Thanks but whatever, I’m doing my own thing.”
Doug doesn’t show much conflict in his thoughts or actions. He wants to leave, he wants to get out of Charlestown. The friends and family who are loyal to him, who love him, are all deserted. Without showing any feelings of guilt or pain about leaving these people behind, Doug just looks like a self-involved asshole who does what he wants without doing anything for anyone else. He fucks his whole crew by dating the bank manager, even though he should stay far, far away from her. He uses their loyalty and willingness to defend him and help him get what HE wants, but he doesn’t do anything for them in return. He’s half-assed in his relationships.
It’s just sad. And disappointing.
I just watched The Town for the first time. Jeremy Renner stole the whole fucking show. I was actually really let down by the ending.
But I’ll always have this scene, so I think I’ll live.
